The Odyssey of the Mind Television Competition was jointly organized by the Shanghai Odyssey of the Mind Association and the China Central Television as a means to provide the young people in different provinces and cities of China to demonstrate their innovative ideas and talents. Every year, over 70 teams from Beijing, Shanghai, Hebei, Wuhan, Dalian, Jiangsu, Wenzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Dongguan and Hong Kong engage in this Competition. About 500 coaches and students attend the event.

The 3rd Odyssey of the Mind Television Competition

The 3rd Odyssey of the Mind Television Competition was held in Beijing from 19 to 24 August 2001. A delegation of 16 persons was sponsored to represent Hong Kong in the Competition and meet other top finishers from the rest of China. The Competition was video-taped and broadcast to the major cities in China.

The teams representing Hong Kong come from TWGHs Li Ka Shing College, St. Paul's Convent School and Maryknoll Fathers' School. They participated in two Long-term Problems namely "Techno-Pets (機器寵物)" and "Consequential Relationships (因果關係)".

"Techno-Pets" is one of the Long-term Problems of the 2000/01 Odyssey of the Mind Programme. Teams have to design and build two Techno-Pet Vehicles (TPVs) that will perform eight tasks, which include chasing other vehicles, sounding a warning, retrieving an object and sleeping.

In the Problem "Consequential Relationships", teams have to initiate the motion of a snooker ball so that it will complete ten tasks. Some of the tasks include springing over an object, switching on a light bulb and bursting a balloon.

Apart from the competitions, our teams had opportunities to interact with students in the Mainland and engage in cultural exchange. They also joint a sightseeing tour to major tourist spots in Beijing, such as the Great Wall, the Wang Fu Jin Avenue, the Thirteen Tombs of the Ming Dynasty and the Forbidden City, to enhance their understanding of our motherland.

The 4th Odyssey of the Mind Television Competition

The 4th Odyssey of the Mind Television Competition was held in Beijing from 19 to 22 August 2002. The Hong Kong delegation comprised one team from TWGHs Li Ka Shing College, one team from St. Francis Xavier's College and two teams from Madam Lau Kam Lung Secondary School of MFBM, making up a total of 16 delegates.

Our teams participated in two Long-term Problems - "Travelling against the Wind (逆風行駛)" and "An Expedition to the Mars (火星探險)". In the former, teams design and create a vehicle which can travel against the wind generated by an electrical fan. Sounds weird? "That involves the application of a great many physics principles!" one of the team members exclaimed in delight.

Teams participating in "An Expedition to the Mars" also create a vehicle which, but for this time, travels on a simulated landscape of the Mars. Once placed on the setting, the vehicle starts its journey automatically, strolling along a stony seashore, travelling across some obstacles and finally crossing over a deep valley.

Each team performed very well. Their creativity and talent were greeted by loud applause. Every team from Hong Kong was awarded an Honourable Mention (優異獎) in the Long-term Problem competition and what is more, Madam Lau Kam Lung Secondary School of MFBM was awarded the Best Artistic Design Award (最佳藝術設計獎).

Feeling greatly inspired through observing the creative performances of their counterparts on the Mainland, our teams found the experience to be very rewarding and fruitful.

Cheers! Are you ready for this creativity journey?
